Die Macquarie University wurde 1964 mit dem Ziel gegründet, eine neue Richtung in der australischen Hochschulbildung einzuschlagen. Innovative Technologien, neue Lehr- und Forschungsmethoden standen im Mittelpunkt, um die Studierenden auf die Herausforderungen einer sich zunehmend globalisierenden Arbeitswelt vorzubereiten.
Praxisnähe gehört deshalb zu einem Studium an der Macquarie dazu: Einige Dozenten sind gleichzeitig auch in der freien Wirtschaft tätig. Solche Kontakte ermöglichen Studierenden, ein Praktikum in interessanten Unternehmen zu absolvieren. Auch im Forschungsbereich gehört die Macquarie zu Australiens Spitze. Auf dem Campus gibt es über 25 Forschungszentren, eines davon ist ein der NASA angeschlossenes Zentrum für Astrobiologie.
In Rankings schneidet die Macquarie regelmäßig herausragend ab: So wurde die MQ com Shanghai Jiao Tong University Ranking (SJTU) auf Platz 34 aller Unis im Asien-Pazifik-Raum gewählt, das MBA Programm schaffte es 2008 auf Platz 57 im Magazin Economist Intelligence Unit.
Die Macquarie University bietet Studiengänge in den Bereichen Wirtschaftswissenschaft, Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften, Jura, Psychologie, Umweltwissenschaften, Erziehungswissenschaft sowie Informations- und Kommunikationswissenschaft an.

Auch für ein Praktikum können sich internationale Studenten in Kombination mit einem Gastsemester an der Macquarie bewerben. Wer sich für diese Option entscheidet, arbeitet 10 oder 20 Stunden pro Woche unbezahlt in einem australischen Unternehmen und belegt während der restlichen Zeit Kurse an der Universität. Das Angebot gilt für Studenten fast aller akademischer Fachrichtungen.

Der Campus erstreckt sich über eine riesige Parklandschaft eine halbe Autostunde nordwestlich von Sydneys Hafen und Geschäftszentrum. Der moderne, bestens ausgestattete Campus beherbergt mehrere Museen, zwei Hotels und einen Golfplatz, auch Einkaufsmöglichkeiten gibt es zur Genüge. Outdoorfans finden in den nahe gelegenen Blue Mountains ein ideales Terrain.
