Die 1873 gegründete University of Canterbury auf Neuseelands Südinsel ist eine traditionsbewusste, forschungsorientierte Universität. Allerdings weiß man auch hier, dass exzellente Forscher zunächst eine gute akademische Ausbildung genießen müssen, um sich dann auf ihren Gebieten als Exerten einen Namen machen zu können. Deshalb hat die Uni auch ein ganz besondres Augenmerk auf die Qualität sowohl ihrer Lehre und als auch die der Lehrenden gerichtet. Das Universtiy Centre for Teaching and Learning bietet Studierenden hervorragende Ressourcen wie ein umfangreiches Beratungsangebot, Workshops und Materialien, um das eigene Lernverhalten zu optimieren. Professoren werden mit Weiterbildungsmaßnahmen fit gemacht, Preise für Exzellenz in Lehre und Forschung verleiht die Uni jährlich als zusätzlichen Anreiz an herausragende Dozenten.

Ein umfangreiches Angebot Bachelor-, Master und PhD Programmen wird an der University of Canterbury angeboten, auch Auslandssemester sind möglich. Sechs Colleges bieten Studienprogramme in den Bereichen Geisteswissenschaften, Sozial- und Gesellschaftswissenschaften, Journalismus und Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Rechtswissenschaften, Angwandte Kunst (Musik, Theater, Malerei) und Kunstwissenschaft, Naturwissenschaften, Umweltwissenschaften, Ingenieurwissenschaften, IT, Erziehungwissenschaften, Psychologie und Sportwissenschaften.

Top im naturwissenschaftlich-technischen Bereich: Die Uni hat ihren Forschungsschwerpunkt ganz klar auf die naturwissenschaftlichen und technischen Fächer gelegt - wer hier einen PhD im Bereich Bioengineering und Molekularbiologie machen will, findet schnell eine passende Forschungsgruppe. Auch Umweltwissenschaftler finden hier eine gute Infrastruktur vor, geforscht wird u.a. in den Bereichen Pazifikwissenschaften, Meeresbiolgie und Aquakultur, Antarktikwissenschaften, Geospatial Sciences und Wood Technology. Forschung und Lehre bilden, vor allem im Postgraduatebereich, eine untrennbare Einheit - wer sich hier für seinen Master einschreibt und bereits den PhD vor Augen hat, kann an der University of Canterbury so unter Umständen schon mal an seinem späteren Forschungsvorhaben arbeiten und einen großen Schritt weiter kommen.

Keine Bearbeitungsgebühr für IEC-Bewerber
Internationale Studenten, die sich an der University of Canterbury bewerben, müssen normalerweise eine Bearbeitungsgebühr in Höhe von NZ$ 60 bezahlen, wenn sie ihre Bewerbung an die Universität schicken. Studenten, die sich über IEC Online bewerben, müssen diese Gebühr jedoch nicht bezahlen.

Die modern und gut ausgestatteten Einrichtungen der Universität befinden sich auf einem großzügig angelegten Campus mit guter Verkehrsanbindung in das Stadtzentrum. Kultureller Mittelpunkt der 350.000 Einwohner Stadt Christchurch im Distrikt Canterbury ist das alte Universitätsviertel mit Kunsthhandwerkermarkt, Kinos und Gallerien.
